Retinoblastoma

Retinoblastoma is the most common eye cancer of
children less than 5 years. This tumor is a fast spreading condition and if not
detected early can lead to death. The earliest signs noticed by parents are
white reflex in the eye and or eyes not appearing straight. Either of the signs
warrants immediate consultation with an eye doctor.

Although this tumor is dangerous, it is 100%
treatable. Depending on how early it is detected , treatment can be with laser,
chemotherapy. If detected late it may be necessary to remove the entire eye and
be replaced by an artificial eye( artificial eye has no vision , it is for
cosmetic purpose only).

If mother or father had eye cancer in childhood,
its important to get their children examined immediately after birth. The examination
should continue every few months till age of 5 years and then every year.
